It is the 2nd largest city in that same region, after Coimbra, with a municipality population of 128,640 (as of 2021) in an area of 565.09 square kilometres (218.18 sq mi). It is the seat of its own district and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leiria-Fátima. The city is part of the historical province of Beira Litoral.

O m|i|mo – museu da imagem em movimento foi premiado em 2011 pela Associação Nacional de Museologia com uma menção honrosa na categoria de Melhor Museu Português. Nascido no âmbito das comemorações do centenário do Cinema Português (1996). É excelente!
